Having grown up in the segregated American South, Dr. Protho became particularly interested in promoting healthy nutrition and diets for African Americans. Johnnie Hines Watts was born on February 28, 1922, in Atlanta, Georgia, in the segregated South.

Dr. Prothro lived through the racial tension of the civil rights era in Alabama in the 1960s. A train conductor spit upon her for sitting in the “whites only” section when the “colored” section was full. Since she feared for her safety at this time, she left Alabama for the University of Connecticut at Storrs. She became associate professor in the Department of Home Economics from 1963 to 1967. She was there with her husband and daughter. They stayed in Connecticut until her daughter graduated from high school, then moved back to the South.
