Old Norse literature also mentions a sunstone that helped the Vikings navigate in poor weather. Its existence was doubted until recently, but new research indicates that they would probably have used Iceland spar, a crystal that has polarizing properties. By moving the crystal across the ield of vision until a yellow pattern is seen, it is possible to determine, within a few degrees, the direction of the sun in cloudy or foggy conditions, or at twilight. In addition to these two aids, the Vikings made use of landmarks when they were in sight of land.

The sagas state that he named it Greenland to make it sound more attractive to prospective settlers. Eirik set out with 25 ships but only 14 made landfall in Greenland.
