Lucier studied music theory and composition at Yale University (BA ’54) with Howard Boatwright, Richard Donvan, David Kraehenbuhl and Quincy Porter, and at Brandeis University (MFA ’60) with Arthur Berger and Harold Shapero. During the summers of 1958 and 1959, Lucier studied at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland and Lukas Foss, and spent two years, 1960 to 1962, in Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship. From 1962 to 1970, he taught at Brandeis and conducted the University Chamber Chorus, which devoted much of its time to new music.
