The light we see is typically a bit more complicated. This unpolarized light contains waves vibrating in many different planes (see Fig. 5). If we could see a polarized light wave moving toward us, we would see the electric field vibrating up and down along one axis and the magnetic field vibrating perpendicular to it, side to side. Unpolarized light waves coming toward us would have vibrations at all possible angles. Light from an object like the Sun or an electric light is formed by the rapid and random motions of charged particles, which generate electromagnetic waves.

In a letter to a French scholar and colleague later in his life, he described the nature of the astronomical work he performed during the productive period he spent away from Cambridge during the plague years of 1665 and 1666: I began to think of gravity extending to the orb of the Moon & (having found out how to estimate the force with which a globe revolving within a sphere presses the surface of the sphere) from Kepler’s rule of the periodical times of the Planets being in sesquialterate proportion [P2 = C × a3] of their distances from the centers of their Orbs, I deduced that the forces which keep the Planets in their Orbs must be reciprocally as the squares of their distances from the centers about which they revolve: and thereby compared the force requisite to keep the Moon in her Orb with the force of gravity at the surface of Earth, and found them to answer pretty nearly.

He built his first telescope in 1609 (polishing the glass lenses by hand, a very tedious job) and quickly made three very important discoveries. These discoveries were so important that some people claim that no greater discoveries have followed so quickly after the construction of a new telescope. The first discovery was that Jupiter had moons that orbited it in a regular way, just as the Moon orbited Earth. This was the final death knell for the geocentric model of the solar system, for how could moons be orbiting another planet if all objects had to orbit Earth?
